Hollywood star invites North Lincolnshire chef over to his home This is Scunthorpe --

COLIN McGurran, chef patron at Winteringham Fields, has cooked on live television for Hollywood star Antonio Banderas.

Colin was invited to be a guest chef on popular BBC1 show Saturday Kitchen – taking his place in front of the camera for the first show of the new series.

Despite feeling the nerves, he managed to produce a magnificent chicken cannelloni dish, which Banderas described as "fantastic".

Tucking into the food, he looked up from his plate in amazement, saying "I don't know how you guys do it".

And it seems Colin made a good impression on the A-list celebrity, having been invited to visit his house the next time he is in Los Angeles.

"He was a really nice guy and was genuinely interested in the food," said Colin.

"He told me to come over and stay at his house when I'm next in LA. There was no ego at all, or any sense of him being a prima donna.

"Off camera he was even more friendly than he seemed on screen and was happy to talk to everyone.

"At the beginning I was really feeling the nerves. I had a chat with Antonio, but when everything was getting prepared and the lights went up, it was quite an intimidating atmosphere. It takes you a while to get into it. By the time I got cooking I was fine and I am happy with the way my dish came across."

His appearance on the show was the first time Colin has cooked live on TV, having previously taken part in – and won – Great British Menu, which was pre-recorded.

And his charm and culinary skills have had a knock-on effect at his restaurant – with a massive influx of bookings following the show.

Colin said: "Saturday Kitchen gets such a massive audience. I tried to sell Scunthorpe and Winteringham Fields as best I could, but I can't really remember what I said. I was so focused on getting the food right.

"Living in North Lincolnshire I wanted the area to come across well. My Twitter has gone mad since it was aired, and I was getting an extra 300 followers every hour.

"The phone at the restaurant has been ringing off the hook as well. We have lots of people from London booking tables and even a few from as far as Cornwall.

"It can only be good for the restaurant, and shows we are bringing people to the area. The producers said I did really well and that they wanted me back really soon."

Winteringham Fields has just been awarded its third rosette by the AA, a prestigious feat not achieved by many restaurants.

And Colin has already left the country on his next scouting mission – to find inspiration from other kitchens around the world.

"Venice is the first stop for me, at a restaurant called Daniele," he said.

"I am going to learn from them and see what they do. It is a way of getting more inspiration to bring back to Winteringham Fields and turn into a new dish.

"I went to Chicago recently to Alinea, currently rated the fourth best restaurant in the world, and also visited El Celler de Can Roca in Barcelona, currently ranked as the best restaurant in the world.

"It is all about using a lot of the contacts I have. The higher my profile goes, the easier it is to ring them. I am riding that wave at the moment.

"I have got to keep the menu changing all the time, to keep it current and exciting. It is all about being innovative and new. I look at ideas from other restaurants, understand them and recreate something similar at my restaurant.

"Then I tweak things and change the technique. Before you know it you have a new dish.

"I have never had a set way of doing things, which makes me a better cook because I am always learning and trying new things." Reported by This is 15 hours ago.
