McDonald's restaurants in Hong Kong have taken chicken nuggets off the menu after expired meat scandal at Chinese supplier

HONG KONG -- Chicken nuggets and other items have been taken off the menu by McDonald's in Hong Kong after it emerged that one of its meat suppliers in China, Shanghai Husi Food Co., allegedly processed and sold expired meat.

Husi Food has been embroiled in a meat scare scandal since last weekend when a TV program showed footage of employees using out-of-date meat, adding offal that had fallen to the floor, processing and repackaging the meat products before they were shipped to fast food chain clients. These fast food chains included some of the largest -- McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), Burger King, Pizza Hut and Starbucks.

McDonald's Hong Kong said in a statement: "We reiterate that until today, all the food sold at McDonald's restaurants conform to the food safety standard under Hong Kong legal regulations," having pulled McSpicy chicken fillets, some salads, fresh corn cups and lemon tea off their menu.

Some of the meat originating from the Husi Food factory at the centre of the meat scandal were also shipped to Japan, where McDonald's has removed chicken nuggets from the menu at 500 restaurants.

Shanghai Husi is the Chinese unit of US-based food supplier OSI Group.
