Earlier this month Missouri Governor Jay Nixon vetoed a series of tax incentives passed in the waning days of the state's legislative session. Beneficiaries of the tax breaks included "data centers" broadly construed, restaurants, power companies, dry cleaners, and many more. As the governor explained in a press release distributed shortly after he spiked the bills, "hese special breaks and exemptions for a handful of special interests are the result of a deeply flawed process and a fundamentally misguided approach to tax policy." The administration estimates the breaks would cost state and local governments over a half billion dollars in lost revenue annually; Republicans disagree with that figure.
